FTA APTA Web Based Drill Program.
(01/15/05) The Federal Transit Administration and the American Public
Transportation Association are working together to develop an innovative new
pilot program for conducting emergency preparedness drills and training. The
program is intended to offer consistent, effective, affordable emergency
preparedness information and guidance to agencies of all sizes.
They have hired Philadelphia-based TRA to develop software that provides
Internet-based emergency preparedness training and tabletop drills. TRA is well
respected throughout the transit industry for its safety and security
expertise, as well as for its popular safety information technology tool,
TransitSafeTM.
Throughout the first half of 2005, TRA will work with APTA and FTA to create
two online drill scenarios - one in which a tabletop focuses on a single,
multimodal transit facility, with multiple agencies and responders, and one in
which a more standard tabletop event will take place and can be viewed
separately by numerous transit agencies throughout the country.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has agreed to offer its
extensive background in transit drills to conduct the first pilot. The second
type of drill will be less agency-specific, and more applicable across the
industry. Participating agencies will log into a server from any Internet
connection and be brought to a step-by-step drill that displays all activities
in the drill and includes interactive testing questions. As a result, lessons
learned will be documented and sample-training programs will be created.
The results of these pilot programs will aid in the creation of a larger,
industry-wide program.
