BART Announces Plans for New Transbay Rail Crossing

The Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART) has announced plans to build an additional crossing for rail to bridge the San Francisco Bay. The crossing, which may take the form of a tube as with the existing crossing or may take another form, is scheduled to begin construction within the next ten years. BART planners will be contracting out a feasibility study for several options for the crossing in 2019, including the possibility of including standard-gauge tracks alongside the existing wider-gauge BART tracks to expand transit options for the region. Though the crossing will not begin construction for another decade, BART estimates that commuter demand for transbay rail travel options will outpace their current capacity by 2040 even in medium-growth projections.
