TRA is a national leader in providing rail fixed guideway state safety oversight (SSO) support services, and our team is lucky to work with a wide variety rail agencies as part of our portfolio of projects. Our technical support of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a unique project among our SSO roster, since in Florida the program not only covers rail systems regulated by the FTA, but also airport people mover (APM) systems, commuter rail systems, and bus agencies. This broad spectrum of modes and transit environments demands a wide array of technical skills and backgrounds, and the TRA personnel who support FDOT in carrying out its program represent a veritable cross-section of transit roles. Our FDOT team includes a former transit agency safety manager, a rail engineer with thirty years’ experience in passenger and freight, and several project managers and analysts with transportation planning and research backgrounds.
Alongside FDOT staff, TRA specializes in performing audits and reviews of system safety and related components for overseen transit agencies. In the past three years, TRA has audited the eight APM lines at Miami and Orlando International Airports, the SunRail Commuter rail system, and the state’s largest bus agency, Miami-Dade’s Metrobus. In addition, TRA performs regular and ongoing oversight for Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s Skyway monorail, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit TECO Line historic streetcar in Tampa, and Miami-Dade’s heavy rail Metrorail and Metromover APM systems.
In addition, TRA’s team supporting FDOT includes Florida-based safety and technical experts, as well as consultants from across TRA who coordinate on-site with the rail transit agencies throughout the year. We are excited to help support oversight of Miami’s new Metorail cars and JTA’s transformation with a new autonomous vehicle-based transit system. For more information, check out our SSO page.
