Meet Our Team: Zach Billet

How did you begin working at TRA? Who was your first client?

I have always been fascinated by public transit for its ability to provide personal access to opportunity, encourage more sustainable urban design, and reduce reliance on private cars. I had studied city planning with a concentration in transportation and infrastructure and had previously worked as a transportation planner. Though I enjoyed working on bicycle and pedestrian projects, I was most interested in working to improve public transit. I first learned about TRA during a grad school career fair where I met several TRA staff. My first client was the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in support of their safety oversight of the JFK and Newark AirTrains.

What do you like most about your job?

My favorite part of this job is spending time onsite at transit agencies learning their physical systems, operating environments, challenges and best practices, and getting to know the people that make the systems work. These experiences have helped me offer greater perspective and value to our clients. Visiting transit systems also means traveling to new cities across the U.S. and, of course, sampling their cuisine.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I have juggled knives and flaming clubs. Not all at once.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

I have been learning how to bake bread and I especially enjoy learning new methods and recipes.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

I have always wanted to go to Austria and Switzerland to eat, hike, and ride trains across the Alps.
